Yale Deadbolt Installation: The Ashburn Owner’s Guide

Yale deadbolt installation in Ashburn typically runs $195-$385 for a standard single-cylinder replacement, including the lockset, labor, and rekey to match your existing key. We stock Yale B1L, YRD256, and Assure Lock series hardware on our vans, and most residential swaps in Ashburn are completed in under 90 minutes. Same-day scheduling is available when you call before 2 p.m.

Most Ashburn homeowners discover a deadbolt problem one of two ways: the key spins without retracting the bolt, or the thumb turn rotates freely while the bolt stays put. Both point to internal cam or gearbox failure, and both leave the door unsecured.

Which Yale Models This Applies To

Yale residential deadbolts fall into three series you’ll find in Ashburn homes built after 2010. The B1L and B1L Nightlatch are the mechanical single-cylinder deadbolts, common in Broadlands and Brambleton townhomes. The YRD256 and YRD226 are the key-free touchscreen and keypad deadbolts, often retrofitted onto One Loudoun condos. The Assure Lock SL (YRD256) and Assure Lock Keyed (YRC226) are the smart variants that pair with August or Yale Access modules.

To identify your model, remove the interior escutcheon and check the label on the mounting plate. The series code is stamped above the voltage rating. For the B1L, the critical spec is the backset: 2-3/8 inches for pre-2000 Ashburn construction, 2-3/4 inches for most post-2005 builds. The smart locks require a 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness; older Ashburn homes with 1-3/8 inch hollow-core doors need a spacer kit we carry standard.

We install OEM Yale cylinders and, where the homeowner prefers, quality aftermarket equivalents by Schlage and Medeco that fit the Yale bore pattern. The aftermarket route saves roughly $40-$60 on parts but voids any remaining Yale warranty. For smart locks, we recommend OEM: the August module pairing is finicky with third-party hardware.

Signs Your Yale Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Yale Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
  • Key rotates fully but bolt does not retract. The tailpiece cam has sheared at the gearbox interface. This is the most common B1L failure we see in Ashburn, usually after 6-10 years of use. The cam is zinc alloy and fatigues with repeated torque.
  • Thumb turn spins without resistance. The interior spindle has detached from the gearbox. On YRD256 units, this often follows a low-battery period where the motor strained against weak voltage.
  • Smart lock shows “jammed” errors but mechanical key works fine. The motorized deadbolt mechanism is binding. Ashburn’s humidity swings, 40% in winter to 80% in summer, cause slight door expansion that misaligns the strike plate.
  • Bolt extends but hangs up in the strike plate. Either the strike is out of alignment or the bolt face is mushroomed from repeated slamming. We check both and replace the strike if the lip is worn.
  • Battery drains within two weeks on a smart lock. The motor is working overtime against mechanical resistance. This burns through CR123A cells fast and will eventually burn out the motor itself.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range
Yale B1L single-cylinder deadbolt, installed $195-$265
Yale YRD256 touchscreen smart lock, installed $325-$385
Rekey to match existing key $18-$25 per cylinder
Strike plate adjustment or replacement $0-$35 (included if minor)
Door thickness spacer kit (if needed) $15-$25

What drives the range: lock grade (Grade 2 vs. Grade 1), smart vs. mechanical, and whether the existing bore is standard 2-1/8 inch or needs enlargement. Every price is quoted in writing before we start, per Haven Standard Clause 1. The technician is not permitted to change it at your door. Work is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

DIY or Call Us?

There is nothing dangerous about a deadbolt replacement, but there is plenty that goes wrong. An owner can safely check two things: whether the batteries are fresh in a smart lock, and whether the strike plate screws are tight. Beyond that, the common DIY errors we correct in Ashburn are installing the cam upside down (bolt works backward), over-tightening the mounting screws (binds the mechanism), and failing to seat the tailpiece fully (works for a week, then fails).

Yale smart locks require factory reset and module pairing that, done incorrectly, bricks a $280 lock. We carry the programming sequence for every firmware revision. The name on the invoice is the same name on the van.
