Residential and light commercial: The Sargent Signature Series (KIK cylinders, rim cylinders, and mortise housings) uses standard .115-inch diameter bottom pins and master pins in .003-inch increments. We stock these pins in Ashburn for same-day recombinate jobs.

Commercial grade: The Sargent 10-Line (mortise, bored lock, and exit trim) and the older 6-Line series use larger-format interchangeable cores (LFIC) that require Sargent-specific control keys. The 10-Line’s A, B, E, and F keyways are not interchangeable - a B keyway core will not seat in an A keyway housing, a mistake we see when facilities teams order replacement hardware online without checking the stamping on the existing core face.

How to identify your series: Remove one cylinder and check the face stamping. “SARGENT 10” indicates 10-Line; “SIG” or a simple “S” with no line number indicates Signature. The keyway letter (A through F, or LA, LB, LD for restricted keyways) is stamped adjacent to the plug face. Measure the cylinder diameter at the face: 10-Line LFIC measures approximately 1.180 inches; Signature KIK cylinders measure roughly .995 inches.

OEM versus aftermarket: For Sargent restricted keyways (LA, LB, LD), only factory-original cores maintain key control - aftermarket equivalents cannot be keyed to existing master key systems because Sargent does not release blank specifications for restricted profiles. For open keyways (A, B, E, F), we use Sargent OEM cylinders or Medeco-compatible aftermarket cylinders when the customer wants to upgrade pick resistance without replacing the entire hardware set.

Signs Your Sargent Master Key System Is Failing

• Master key opens units it shouldn’t. This indicates a cross-keying error in the bitting or a master pin stack that has worn to create an unintended shear line. In Ashburn’s newer multifamily buildings, we see this most often in 2018-2022 construction where original keying was rushed during certificate-of-occupancy pressure and master pin stacks were improperly calculated.

• Key requires jiggling or repeated insertion to turn. Worn pin chambers in Sargent cylinders allow pins to drag rather than lift cleanly. In Northern Virginia’s humidity cycle - dry winter heating to swampy summer air - brass pins oxidize and bind more aggressively than in drier climates.
• Core pulls out with the key or spins freely in the housing. The Sargent LFIC retention mechanism uses a control lug that engages a slot in the housing. When the lug wears or the housing slot rounds, the core loses its fixed rotational position and may extract with the key. This is a mechanical failure that will progress to complete lockout.
• Keyway visibly distorted or plug face cracked. Forced entry attempts, tenant key misuse, or simply decades of key insertion at poor angles deform soft brass keyways. Once the keyway geometry shifts, even correctly cut keys will not align pin stacks properly.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no dangerous spring or electrical component in a Sargent master key cylinder, but there is a correct way to do this job and several ways to do it wrong.

What an owner can safely check: Confirm the keyway stamping matches the key you are using. Verify the cylinder is fully seated in the housing - a partially inserted LFIC will malfunction without being broken. Check whether the problem is consistent across all keys for that cylinder or isolated to one worn key.

Where DIY goes wrong: Sargent master key systems require depth keys or a code machine to cut change keys to the correct bitting; hand-filing or hardware-store duplication will not achieve the .003-inch tolerances needed for reliable master key operation. Improperly combinated cylinders create security gaps that are invisible until an audit reveals them. And removing an LFIC without the correct control key damages the retention lug, converting a $280 recore into a $600+ mortise lock replacement.
