The X4 series, introduced around 2005, adds a fourth pin stack and a redesigned sidebar; face stamps read “X4” or have a small four-point mark. The current 3-in-1 platform, including the M3 and newer eCylinder variants, uses a slider system alongside traditional pins and is backward-compatible with X4 keyways but not Biaxial.

To identify your series without disassembly: remove one cylinder and photograph the face stamp, or measure the plug diameter with calipers. Biaxial plugs measure .495″-.498″; X4 and 3-in-1 measure .500″-.503″. This half-thousandth difference matters. Signs Your Medeco Master Key System Is Failing

• Sub-key opens a lock above its level. This means one or more master pins have sheared, worn, or been installed at incorrect heights during a previous rekey. The master pin is what creates the hierarchical access; when it fails, the keying hierarchy collapses. • Cylinder face shows scoring or the plug protrudes slightly. Someone attempted to drill or pick the lock, damaging the sidebar groove or pin chambers. Medeco’s pick resistance is genuine, but failed attempts leave internal debris that jams the master pin stack. In One Loudoun commercial spaces, we have found drill bits broken off inside chambers from amateur bypass attempts.

What you can safely check: confirm the key number stamped on your key bow matches the cylinder face stamp, and verify no visible debris is lodged in the keyway. A flashlight and compressed air are sufficient here.

Where DIY goes wrong: disassembling a Medeco cylinder requires a follower tool sized to the exact plug diameter; without it, the sidebar and its springs launch across the room. The springs are under tension and the sidebar fingers are sharp. Reassembly demands a pinning tray with depth gauges calibrated to Medeco’s angle-cut specifications.
